Alan Sitomer, California's 2003 Teacher of the Year, is an inner city teacher at Los Angeles High, a school plagued by gangs, guns and drugs. So how do you teach reading to students who essentially don't read? Instead of giving up, Alan wondered if he wrote a book specifically targeted to urban students interests, if they would read. When students started bootlegging his book, he knew he was on to something.
