KCTS Connects Special Edition: The Learning Curve: No Child Left Behind

On this special edition of KCTS Connects, we take a close look at the "No Child Left Behind" Act, the centerpiece of the federal government's education reform efforts. "No Child Left Behind" mandates that states conduct extensive assessments to measure the improvement of children attending public schools. Among the new federal rules: any student in a school that's failing to meet achievement standards can transfer to any other school in the same district that is meeting those standards. Failure to comply with the federal regulations could jeopardize Washington's $800 million/year federal aid package.

KCTS Connects Special Edition: The Learning Curve is the second of four KCTS Connects specials on education that will be presented as part of The Learning Curve, a two-year collaboration between KCTS Television and KPLU 88.5 NPR that focuses on issues affecting Washington schools.

The KCTS Connects team travels to the Othello, Bellevue and Highline School districts to meet students, teachers and administrators in these three distinct school districts to hear their views about the impact of "No Child Left Behind" on their schools.

Enrique Cerna reviews the pros and cons of the law in a panel discussion with Susan Sclafani of the U.S. Department of Education; Terry Bergeson, State Superintendent of Public Instruction; Jean Carpenter, Executive Director of Washington State PTA, and James Harvey, senior fellow with the Center for Reinventing Public Education at the UW Evans School of Public Affairs.

Enrique also talks with KPLU reporter Jennifer Niessen who will give us a sneak preview of her upcoming reports for The Learning Curve.

The KPLU reports and feedback are scheduled to air during Morning Edition at 6:30 a.m. and 8:30 a.m., and again during All Things Considered. Reports will air on:

  • Monday, June 2 and Tuesday, June 3: report on "Special Education," a two-part series (Listener feedback airs Friday, June 6.)

  • Monday, June 16: Profile of Enumclaw High School graduating senior Lacey Androsko, who is well versed in education reform on two fronts-as a student in the classroom and as a student member of the State Board of Education. (Listener feedback airs Friday, June 20.)
